The stern of a black and white vessel named "Cape Sable Halifax" docked at a wharf under a bright blue sky with scattered white clouds. The ship features a red life ring, nautical flags, and a small Canadian flag flying from the mast. In the background, several sailboats are anchored in the calm blue water of the harbor, with a lush green shoreline and a small island visible in the distance.

Activities

Students will begin their day with an introduction where they become “certified” vessel inspectors. Each student will receive a badge (sticker) to place on their shirt, a pencil, a mini clipboard and a vessel inspection booklet. Students will then be divided into small groups to ensure an engaging hands-on experience. The new inspectors will carry their clipboard and booklet to various stations to gather information about Cape Sable.

At the topographical map students will learn what Cape Sable is and where the vessel fished.

The launch tank will become the temporary fishing grounds, where students will use a conical net, like that of Cape Sable, to catch some faux fish and weigh their catch. Students will learn the species fished by Cape Sable.

On the wharf students will work together to stretch out a rope equal to the length of a trawl net and a rope equal to the opening/width/diameter of a trawl net. They will use a measuring tape and their math skills to determine the length.

Once students have been to both the wharf and launch stations, they will compare and contrast both the weight of their catch and the dimensions of the net used at the launch tank, versus that of a Cape Sable trawl net.

On board Cape Sable, students will seek out various emergency features, find miscellaneous items on deck and discover the mechanics of hauling a trawl net.

A wrap-up on board Cape Sable will give students a chance to review what they have learned with one of our engaging Heritage Interpreters. Students will then give their official seal of approval by stamping “Passed” on their vessel inspection booklet.
