Atlantic Canada’s Seafaring Heritage

The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic is dedicated to the preservation of Atlantic Canada’s Seafaring Heritage. As such, the resources available for educational and historical purposes are extensive.

No matter if you are looking for information in general or searching for specific maritime related events, people or vessels; our Research Library and Archives will help you find the answers.

School Programming

School Programming is important to the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic. Programs can be adapted to any grade level and are available throughout the year. The Museum is also a great resource for students completing heritage projects!

Build Your Own

Build Your Own is your way to customize your students educational experience. Your day can be planned to have a marine theme, a fishing focus, or a combination. Your museum visit can be filled with a variety of guided mini programs, be self-guided, or a combination of both.

Mining at the Museum

Designed for Grades 5 & 6, this curriculum-connected program offers an educational, creative, and hands-on experience that brings learning to life. Students will explore the museum in a way that’s both engaging and informative. By using a student-centered approach, students will work together to build a visual work of art. They will need to “mine” the museum to collect tool tokens to purchase tools to construct their fantastical creation. Collecting the tool tokens will require mental math, Mi’kmaq language, object-based learning, plus language comprehension. The final product is a visual craft piece that each team creates.

Cape Sable Vessel Inspectors

Designed for Grades 3 & 4, this curriculum connected program takes an investigative approach using fun, hands-on learning experiences. Students will explore the museum’s 1962 side trawler,Cape Sable, in an engaging and informative manner.
